Dr. Simmons is a “military brat” and was lucky enough to travel the world. She graduated from high school in the United Kingdom and continues to love exploring different countries and cultures. Her other hobbies include cooking new recipes, attending live performances, and spending time with her family.

Outside the Office

Dr. Simmons has over a decade of university teaching experience. She was a visiting professor at Texas Southern University and is currently a clinical professor at Texas A&M University in College Station where she teaches graduate-level psychology courses while providing clinical supervision to doctoral-level school and counseling psychology students. Her current research interests are in culturally competent psychological practice, crisis intervention diversity considerations, and local education/health agency program evaluation. As a university faculty member, Dr. Simmons has been awarded several grants to provide community health outreach services, in addition to several honors and awards such as the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Student Relations, one of the highest honors provided by the university, and as an inaugural awardee of the Leadership Education to Advance Diversity (LEAD) Institue Fellow sponsored by the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology Division 53 of the American Psychological Association. Furthermore, Dr. Simmons has held several departmental administrative positions, including Executive Director of a counseling and assessment clinic. This psychology training clinic provided in-person and telebehavioral health services to university students, children, and adults living in the local region, particularly those from underserved and underinsured communities. Her passion for service has led to memberships and leadership positions in state, national, and international professional and service organizations including the Texas Association of School Psychologists and the American Psychological Association.

Her passion for mental health provision expands beyond the lecture halls. At Psychology Works, each of Dr. Simmons’ clients will receive an individualized plan of care integrating evidence-based treatment approaches. Centering on a systems orientation, Dr. Simmons takes a great interest in understanding individual needs within the complexities of their environment, race, class, culture, religion, gender identity, sexual identity, and family of origin. Dr. Simmon’s primary treatment goals are identifying problems and solutions, self-exploration, and supporting clients in their work toward positive life changes.
